  • Abstrakt w j. angielskim: The monograph analyzes the emigration of highlanders from the Polish Orava region to the USA at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It consists of four chapters. The first one discusses the Orava region, the highlanders as an ethnographic group in Poland and the USA, and the current research on migrations of Oravians. The second chapter deals with the emigration from Orava to the United States at the end of the 19th century. The facts on Orava are juxtaposed with the information on Galicia – the region bordering on Orava at that time. The next part concerns the phenomenon of migrations of Oravians to the USA with the use of the so-called “cow passports”. It shows the profiles of the first two emigrants: Ignacy Dziurczak-Brzezowicki and Piotr Borowy, and information from Church archives. The final chapter includes an analysis of ship manifests from the New York Ellis Island Archives. A database of 2.553 emigrants from Polish Orava at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was created. Issues related to the local and national identity or migration routes of Oravians from individual villages are presented here. A detailed list of Oravian passengers from that period is placed at the end of the monograph.
