  • Abstrakt w j. angielskim: The topics addressed in the book concern the issue of understanding. However, it is not about determining the conditions under which an utterance would be meaningful, or looking for the essence of an utterance, treating it as a specific object of cognition. The research perspective is determined by “understanding in the widest sense”, as Heidegger states in The Question Concerning Technology. It means “to be entirely at home in something, to understand and be expert in it. Such knowing provides an opening up. As an opening up it is a revealing”. The utterance, in such the widest sense, is a medium – at least in principle. As Merleau-Ponty reports in Phenomenology of Perception: “Thus language and the understanding of language apparently raise no problems. The linguistic and intersubjective world no longer surprises us, we no longer distinguish it from the world itself, and it is within a world already spoken and speaking that we think”. The utterance sends out beyond itself, towards the expression of one’s self. To approach what it means to understand an utterance, to discern what it is actually about, and how the utterance provides an opening towards the unfamiliar world of other humans, is a unique and challenging research area, one which this work hopes to make a valid and original contribution.
