- Abstrakt: The profession of a preschool teacher has a long history and evolved from a person protecting children, through a caretaker and a tutor, to a pre-school teacher. The beginnings of educating kindergarten teachers datę back to the first half of the 19'h century. At first it took place in the period when Poland was under occupation. In spite of the difficulties, many attempts w'ere madę to open educational institutions for female tutors, magazines dealing with the subject of preschool education were published as well as congresses for teachers and on educational issues w'ere organized. After Poland regained its independence, one could observe efforts to guarantee education of preschool teachers as an organized and planned process. This was achieved thanks to the following actions: issuing relevant legal acts, opening teachers’ seminars, developing pedagogical journalism, and conducting research in various academic centers. The years of WWII hindered the development of preschool education, and conseąuently - the education of preschool teachers. It was not until 1945 that efforts were madę to restore preschool education and reactivate preschool teachers’ education. Through all that time, people who significantly contributed to raising the level of preschool education were visible and made their mark - philanthropists, pedagogues, psychologists, writers and social activists.
