  • Abstract in English: Scientific interest in marriages and multicultural families focuses primarily on the functioning of culturally distant couples and presenting this phenomenon in the context of relations between separate traditions from which spouses come. This theme is particularly exposed in relation to differences and conflicts arising on the basis of religion and negotiations regarding patterns of cultural socialization and the integration of children from mixed relationships. In the title of the work, there is a category of meaning that will be understood as evaluating, giving meaning to cultural differences. This monograph is based on the achievements of sociological sciences, psychology or the sciences of culture and religion, but it is mostly pedagogical work in the field of social pedagogy. The book is divided into theoretical, methodological and empirical parts. In the theoretical part, theories of marriage and family, basic definitional issues and research to date on intercultural marriages and families were analyzed. In three theoretical chapters, the most important scientific theories are presented, which at a later stage of the research were used to create methodological assumptions and interpret the obtained research results. The methodological part presents the research paradigm and objectives, research problems, method, technique and research tool, research organization, as well as the characteristics of the studied cases. The main problem of this paper is as follows: What are the significance of cultural differences for the functioning of marriages and multicultural families? Women of Polish nationality with husbands of a nationality other than Polish were selected for the study. The empirical chapter presents answers to the research problems posed. Based on the majority of the respondents’ answers, it is possible to make some generalizations and state that all the surveyed women gave cultural differences a very high importance. There was no respondent who would conclude that cultural differences have no significance for the functioning of their families. Meaning was mainly given by treating cultural differences as positive resources and development opportunities. These were resources for the respondents themselves, for their children and for their relationships. The respondents also pointed to the negative significance of cultural differences manifested in various models of marital roles, cultural values and lifestyle models, as well as external, non-family factors, such as social evaluation or problems with social integration of foreigners. The monograph ends with conclusions and extensive pedagogical postulates. The work is completed with a bibliography, list of tables, an appendix and index of names.
