  • Abstract in English: The book discusses selected topics in the philosophy of education, focusing on broadly understood axiological issues. It consists of three parts. The first one, entitled “Human Being, Values, Education”, shows how educational theories are grounded in philosophical anthropology (referring in particular to Karol Wojtyła’s personalism). It analyzes the role of values and conscience in the process of shaping an individual. Part two: “Culture – on the Way to Humanity (and Back)”, starts from emphasizing two aspects of culture that are the most important from the educational point of view, i.e. the community-forming role of culture, and culture as a collection of the most important accomplishments of a particular community, perhaps not available to everyone, but constituting a certain pattern of aspiration. It shows the necessary role of culture in building our identity and worldview, and its meaning in our everyday life. The importance of education as a “cultural memory”, analyzed in relation to the thoughts of Plato and Nietzsche, indicates that the attempts to build one’s identity in complete detachment from the existing culture are doomed to failure. Finally, for contrast, the category of barbarism is analyzed as a denial of culture and, at the same time, the inevitable effect of discontinuing educational procedures. Part three, entitled “Humanities – a Return to Classical Paideia”, referring to the examples of fairy tales and philosophy, shows the educational value of the humanities. They develop intellectual skills and competencies useful not only to the individual, but also necessary for the functioning of our entire civilization, while the intellectual habits fostered by surfing the net make it difficult to function beyond the digital environment. In this situation, cultivating the humanities appears as a kind of civilization necessity.
