- Abstrakt: The present article will compare several excerpts from texts written by three authors, Saint Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle (1588), George MacDonald's Diary of an Old Soul (1880) and C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity (19411944), who all resorted to the metaphor of a dwelling, mansion or edifice to explain what happens during and after a spiritual transformation. It has been established that MacDonald inspired Lewis considerably as far as the themes and the characteristic brand of literary imagination were concerned; the influence was frequently acknowledged by the latter and has been studied by many literary critics to date, intrigued by the theological and literary degrees of correspondence." On the other hand, Teresa of Avila's renowned 16th century work, The Interior Castle, considered the most comprehensive guide to the spiritual architecture of the soul, will be used as a key reference in the comparison.
