  • Abstrakt w j. angielskim: The work entitled Educating Teachers for Jesuit Secondary Schools in Poland from 16th to 18th Century, is a historical and pedagogical monograph. The research carried out includes the period from 16th to 18th century, which is the time in which Jesuits had a network of schools in Poland, in which about 8 000–10 000 students were taught (about the year 1620). Within two hundred years of the Jesuits’ activity in Poland, their schools constituted the largest network of educational institutions in the country, which is why there was a great demand for educated, well-prepared teachers. Thus, the objective of the research was to learn about the way of educating teachers for the Jesuit schools; the mission, meaning and the ideal of a teacher in the Jesuit Order; and the origins, assumptions and functioning of institutional structures for educating teachers in the Jesuit educational network in Poland from the 16th to 18th century, i.e. from the beginning of their activity in Poland until the suppression of the Jesuit Order in 1773. In other words, the main aim of the research was to reconstruct, as fully as possible, the process of vocational preparation of teachers in the Jesuit teacher training seminaries in Poland, from the 16th to 18th century. The analysis of sources made it possible to specify the assumptions on which the creation of teacher seminaries in the 16th century was based, as well as further history of those institutions in the 17th and 18th century. Also, based on the research, it was possible to reconstruct the legal basis for the functioning of the seminaries (the Order’s documents which regulated their functioning), the number of the seminaries, and their placement in Poland within the discussed period of time. The other outcomes of the research carried out were the reconstruction of the curriculum of teacher education, the handbooks and other materials that were used in teacher education, the library resources in the seminaries, as well as the number of teachers, their education and course of teaching career. However, the objective of this work, which includes the results of the research that was carried out, is not to present the history of particular seminaries, but to show their role in the vocational preparation of teachers in the Jesuit schools at that time. The objective of the research was to reconstruct, as fully as possible, the process of preparing Jesuits – in teacher seminaries functioning in Poland in 16th-18th century – for their future pedagogical work in Jesuit schools. Since there was a close connection between the concept of a Jesuit school and educating Jesuit teachers, the research also aimed at specifying the assumptions of the Jesuit system of teacher education. The fulfilment of such objectives was possible, first of all, due to the method of critical analysis of sources and texts concerning the Jesuit education of the time. In the research the results of which the work in question presents, there was also used the method of hermeneutical interpretation of sources of Ignatian pedagogy, which was shaped from the beginning of the Jesuit Order – it is confirmed by guidelines, numerous and scattered in various documents, concerning both the educational institutions and the person of a teacher. While analysing the process of educating teachers for Jesuit schools, first it was necessary to learn about the Jesuit Order’s mission and the role of educational activity in that mission. Then, to study the programme of teaching and education, as the teachers were to prepare for the fulfilment of a certain curriculum, as we call it in the modern didactics. Finally, it helped to understand the way of perceiving a teacher in the educational process, and the way of educating the teacher. Those particular stages of analysis determine the structure of the book, which was divided into two parts. In the first part, Jesuit education in the 16th-18th century was presented, including its objectives, tasks and organ
