  • Abstrakt w j. angielskim: The book entitled: Between (Non)attendance and Commitment. Parenthood Reconstructed in Postmodernism is a monograph of epistemological and empirical nature. It attempts to summarise the author’s analyses concerning the functioning of a modern family, and it particularly refers to the research on the phenomenon of parenthood in the postmodern reality. Such phenomenon not only requires knowledge, but – first of all – understanding and interpretation. Parenthood, which is an important fragment of the social world, is both the source of the man’s experience in everyday life and the subject of cognitive activity in the scope of scientific rationality. The author’s exploration of modern parenthood matches the scientific trends in which the analyses are focused on understanding and reflective insight into the man’s intersubjective experiences related to family life, and on the meanings and senses given to that experience by individuals. The scientific objective of the presented empirical research was to learn about the fragment of human life whose borders are marked by specific, varied and unique experiences of parenthood in the analysed people’s everyday life, as well as their narration. The author attempted to carry out a thorough analysis of everyday life within the context of the fulfilled parental role: the role of a mother or a father, as well as the ways of experiencing and reconstructing those roles. Also, the author tried to reach the subjective meanings and senses given to the phenomenon of parenthood by modern parents in the stories they tell, taking into account the pedagogical perspective. The practical objective was to indicate the inspirations for modification, adjustment and construction of the direction of activities within different areas of parenthood support in the dynamically changing reality. The main research question was: how do modern parents understand their parenthood reconstructed in everyday life and what meanings do they give to parenthood? In order to obtain the reply to that question, qualitative strategy and biographical- narrative perspective was applied, which made it possible for the author to enter the subjective world of parents and analyse what is inimitable and unique in their everyday life, as well as their stories about themselves. The subject of the analysis carried out in the presented work was both the scientific and common knowledge related to family and parenthood (motherhood and fatherhood). Such knowledge is collected and described by various scientific disciplines (and sub-disciplines), mainly by pedagogy, psychology and sociology, although other aspects and dimensions of family life are also mentioned in the book. A common denominator of the research that has been carried out is perceiving family in the categories of a social group, an upbringing environment, or a system of mutual connections and interactions, or the place in which needs are satisfied and development is enabled. It was assumed that parenthood is the experience of being a parent: a mother or a father, and that experience includes both the psychological, existential, social-cultural dimension, and the biological aspect of being a woman or a man. Also, one has to take into account that each parent’s experience is of individual, unique and inimitable nature, and each experience is different in terms of its course and quality. Such individual experience of a woman as a mother and a man as a father makes it possible to capture the phenomenon of parenthood – motherhood and fatherhood in different dimensions, including the developmental and educational one, taking into account the social and cultural contexts. The title of the book: Between (Non)attendance and Commitment. Parenthood Reconstructed in Postmodernism is the result of the cooperation between the researcher and the narrators (parents), as it refers to the objective and subject of the author’s research and to the categories which were emphasized in the parent’s bio
