- Abstrakt: The aim of the article is to provide a survey of modern criticism on children's literature in medieval England. The main intention is to summarize the last four decades of research devoted to the culture ofthe child in the Middle Ages, early books written for children and the canon of children’s books, as perceived at the close of the fifteenth century in England. Particular attention is paid to extra-textual evidence supporting the thesis that medieval English writers produced literature for younger readers — evidence which is based largely on manuscript studies, but also on research into medieval readership. Medieval literary figures associated with children’s literature that are taken into account include Geoffrey Chaucer, William Caxton as well as the anonymous writers of popular romances.
