  • Abstrakt: The scope of the paper is to show the role of Neoplatonic logic, especially of Porphyry’s logical account of substance, in Christological debates of fifth and sixth centuries AD. I argue that those conceptions were employed in Christology of Cyril of Alexandria, as well as in Trinitological writings of Gregory of Nyssa that were widely referred to in debates over Christological solutions propounded by the Chalcedon Council. In this claim, I deviate from the opinion, frequently adopted in history of theology, that Christological teaching of Cyril and Chalcedon involved incorporation of elements of Aristotelian metaphysics. I strengthen my thesis by showing how the two parties in post-Chalcedonian debates, miaphysite anti-Chalcedonians and so-called Neochalcedonias (the latter including John Grammarian and Leontius of Byzantium), also relied, quite explicitly, on tenets of Neoplatonic logic. Alongside, I show how those logical claims were being given ontological interpretations and discuss some reasons for which an ontology was looked for in Neoplatonic logical works, in spite of the fact that Neoplatonics emphasized divergences between logical and metaphysical approaches, both with respect of their methodologies and objects they study.
