  • Abstrakt w j. angielskim: The article discusses Leibniz’s conception of the best possible world. It is the most controversial idea of the German philosopher, which is often criticized in philosophical literature and beyond. The article discusses the basic features of Leibniz’s philosophy, especially the concept of substance, monadology and preestablished harmony. In Leibniz’s philosophy, the world is first and foremost dynamic, which is a fundamental aspect of reality, while changes are elements of a certain process aimed at the perfection and harmony of reality. This statement has serious consequences for understanding the concept of the best possible world, since it refers to a world that is in the process of becoming. In other words – according to Leibniz – the present world is not the best and perfect, but it can become better in its perfection. This position is very important for understanding Leibniz’s concept of the world, especially that many of his critics do not take it into account. This issue is analyzed in this article, which shows that Leibniz’s concept has theoretical justification, but it also has important implications for his practical philosophy, which concerns human activity in the world and society. The concept of the best possible world plays an important role in Leibniz’s practical philosophy, because it justifies the sense of human activities towards making the world and human life better through the development of technology and practical sciences, including medicine. Therefore, in the analysis and evaluation of Leibniz’s concept, two important aspects should be taken into account: theoretical and practical. This issue is considered in this article. The article also looks at the relationship between Leibniz’s philosophy and Alfred North Whitehead’s process philosophy. The considerations of Leibniz’s idea of the best possible world lead to certain conclusions. The first one concerns the understanding of the concept in the literature devoted to it. It is worth reiterating that for the author of Theodicea, our world can be improved, especially through human action. Leibniz’s world is dynamic, which makes it possible for it to change into a world of greater good and happiness of humanity. Moreover, the analysis of the justification for the above thesis cannot be limited only to a few treatises by Leibniz. It should take into account the writings in the field of practical philosophy, which also deals with the issues of good and evil in our world. Leibniz’s idea can be considered from the angle of Whitehead’s process philosophy, as these two philosophical systems share many similarities, such as, for example, a dynamic vision of reality in which the universe and civilization are in a process of change aimed at the emergence of new structures of greater perfection. Whitehead’s concept of the Absolute, which is the source of the creativity of the universe and the progress of civilization is also an important aspect. Despite the differences between Leibniz’s and Whitehead’s systems, it should be noted that the latter’s process philosophy makes it possible to formulate an alternative thesis about the best possible world. Although the analysis in this article does not resolve the truth of Leibniz’s thesis, it should be the subject of serious philosophical debate today.
