  • Abstrakt w j. polskim: Joseph Conrad’s A Personal Record. Some Reminiscences remains an untypical volume in the writer’s legacy: not only was its author known for his pronounced unwillingness to disclose things personal and biographical, but the autobiography has become somewhat notorious for the embellishments and fictions allegedly contained alongside facts and historical data (Said 1966). However, this paper proposes to re-asses Conrad’s A Personal Record as a narrative bespeaking the writer’s close relation to Poland by virtue of the artistic form rather than factual evidence. I would posit that Conrad successfully features the world of real experience and, particularly, the world of the Polish borderlands, to his British readership, with the compositional and conceptual key placed in the gawęda tale. It is argued that the Polish gawęda, i.e., a characteristic, Polish form of oral expression, allowed Conrad to invest the narrative with a distinct Polish character, which, in turn, enabled his British readers to approach, however indirectly, the phenomenon of Polishness in times when Poland was erased from the maps of Europe.
