  • Abstrakt w j. angielskim: 1981 was an exceptional year in the modern history of Poland. For the first time since the end of World War II, after the wave of protests across the country in August 1980 and after the historic agreements between workers and the communist authorities, a breath of freedom blew, arousing the Poles' hopes. Although the country was plunged into a deep economic crisis, many people, more than ever, regained faith in the power of the nation, the truth, and the possibility of making large-scale political changes. This was supposed to be guaranteed by the Independent Trade Union "Solidarity", which was founded during the strikes of millions of Poles. Despite the censorship and repressions, "Solidarity" tried to create its own weekly. On April 3rd, 1981, the first issue of Tygodnik Solidarność (Solidarity Weekly) was published. It developed dynamically, engaging the greatest authorities of the Polish transformations. Unfortunately, its publication stopped on December 13th, 1981, when martial law was introduced throughout Poland. This monograph attempts to analyze the content of the 37 issues of Tygodnik Solidarność that were published at that time. Issue no. 38, although prepared, had not yet been distributed. The analysis was carried out by the team of the Department of Media and Social Communication of the Institute of Journalism, Faculty of Philosophy of the Jesuit University Ignatianum in Kraków, and several collaborators. The publication, which places before us the panorama of the events that took place in 1981, includes scientific studies in the field of history, philosophy, and media studies. It also includes the interviews with witnesses of those historic days and of the process of creating a new Tygodnik Solidarność.
