• 022 $a The prominent status of attention seems to be indisputable both in everyday language and as a cognitive category. Yet the question of the cognitive value of this category and even the very existence of attention as a specific cognitive process continues to be a matter of debate in the field of psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and philosophy. In this meta-theoretical state of affairs, in this chapter, I will present the leading approaches to the phenomenon of attention in cognitive sciences, the efforts to define it, and my own suggestion to address the question of what attention is in terms of Merleau-Ponty's notion of pre-reflective intentionality.
