- Abstract in English: The study examines the evolution of a ruler’s role and functions in the early Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the mid-13th to the mid-14th century. The author traces the development and transformation of a ruler’s status within society, progressing from a chief of a compound chiefdom to a prince and later a grand duke of an early state. This analysis is situated within the broader context of the state formation processes that unfolded in the lands of Lithuania and the annexed territories of former Rus’ from Mindaugas’ to Gediminas’ reigns. The study emphasises the transformation of a ruler’s functions in the spheres of administration, economy, military, and diplomatic policy, along with his representative capacities during the specified timeframe. The significance of kinship, the introduction of norms of throne succession, and the emergence of the idea of power based on tradition in legitimising grand ducal power are highlighted. Moreover, the perception of a grand duke, his power, his state, and subjects through his self-identification and identification in the narrative sources of the state and neighbouring lands are explored. The importance of the ruler’s title as a marker of his role within society and the level of authority is assumed.
